FEMALE METALHEADS: TAKING A STAND
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Have you heard of Miley Cyrus? Beyonce? Katy Perry? Mariah Carey? More than likely, your answer is yes. What about Jinx Dawson? Dorthia Cottrell? Alissa White-Gluz? Julie Christmas? More than likely, the answer is probably not. The last four women mentioned are well-known female artists who have risen to the top of the charts within the heavy metal community, despite discrimination against their gender. At the start of the heavy metal boom in the 1970’s and 80’s, the presence of women was nearly non-existent. Since then, women have rebelled against the largely-male subculture and refused to be outcasted. Today, women are seen in all parts of the heavy metal culture; they are not only musicians, but also editors, managers, producers, and so much more. The presence of female metalheads has grown exponentially since the beginning of heavy metal and will continue to do so for years on end.
